Laurel
Schumacher ~
Mrs. Schumacher is a veteran teacher and has been teaching first grade at
Metcalf for many years. She
has a BS in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Reading, as well
as being a certified Reading Specialist in the state of Illinois. She
loves working with first graders and their families and enjoys the
enthusiasm of first grade learners. Besides teaching first
grade, Mrs. Schumacher enjoys spending time with her family, running,
golfing, gardening and cooking. Mrs. Schumacher feels lucky to be working in
such an outstanding school with so many enriching opportunities for children
and their families.
Jessica
Wutz ~
Mrs. Wutz is now in her eleventh year of teaching; this is her fifth year at Metcalf. She
completed her certification as a Reading Specialist, has a Master's in
Reading from Illinois State University, and works as a literacy instructor
preparing undergraduates for student-teaching. Her BS is in Early
Childhood Education from ISU, along with an endorsement in special education
and a minor in music. She truly enjoys working with literacy learners
and always looks forward to coming to work. (Not
many people can say that!) She recently (2008) published an
educational text with
Linda Wedwick entitled, BOOKMATCH: How To Scaffold Student Self-Selection
for Independent Reading.
Besides
teaching first grade, Mrs. Wutz
enjoys being outdoors with her husband, John, and her dog, Gus. She loves soccer
and sand volleyball and has fun doing board games. Mrs. Wutz enjoys the sincerity of first graders and their desire
to know more.
Alexis
Santiago ~
Ms. Santiago is completing
her Student Teaching at Metcalf in Mrs. Wutz's classroom, and will graduate
in May '09 with her BS is Early Childhood Education from ISU, along with an
endorsement in Special Education. She is excited about being placed at
Metcalf for her student teaching, and is looking forward to being actively
involved during the school year. During the fall semester she will be in the
classroom on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. During the spring semester she
will be five days a week.
Besides for
teaching and college studies, Ms. Santiago enjoys reading, riding her bike,
cooking (but mostly baking!), coffee, and spending time with friends and
family. Ms. Santiago would love to continue to work with first graders when
the year is over because she enjoys how genuine students at this age are,
and loves to watch children learn and grow throughout the school year.
